We Offer Personalized Attention and Cancer Treatment For Our Patients

Successful cancer care and treatment requires innovative tools, advanced treatments and skilled staff.  With these resources, a diagnosis of cancer today is often accompanied by a strong possibility of recovery. Many cancers today can be cured through surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of these treatments.   Let us do the work to develop your optimal treatment plan so that you can focus on healing.

How Does Chemotherapy Work?

Chemotherapy involves intravenous or oral medications to treat cancers and sometimes other diseases. Our dedicated staff of specialists will work to develop the optimal chemotherapy regimen to help our patients fight their cancer.  Besides ensuring the treatment is customized to each patient, we have designed our care center for total patient comfort with friendly staff, a comfortable setting and available distractions. While the term chemotherapy, or “chemo,” can be frightening, knowing what it is and how it will work with your body can be calming and reassuring. Allowing our medical staff to educate and inform you thoroughly will allow you to focus on self-care and hope during your treatment phases while resting comfortably knowing that our staff has your best interest in mind.

What is Radiation Therapy?

Radiation Therapy uses high-energy radiation particles to target and kill cancer cells. There are several different types of radiation used for cancer treatment and we will work closely with the radiation oncologist  to determine the optimal therapy for your disease.

Should You Consider Surgery?

Surgery is used in the diagnosis, treatment and even in cancer prevention.  Because there are so many different types of cancers that are amenable to surgery – whether by hand or using a robotic surgical system – our medical oncology specialists will work with surgeons to determine when cancer surgery is most appropriate. Our oncologic specialists and treatment team will be open and transparent with you in making the decision that has the best chance of a positive outcome for you and your disease.

How Are Treatment Plans Developed?

There are, of course, risks associated with all of the above-listed treatment options and these risks (as well as potential benefits) will be a large part of the discussion between you and your specialist during the treatment decision making process. We will recommend what we believe your best treatment options are and work closely with you to ensure that you feel comfortable and well-informed about your treatment. Our dedicated specialists and support staff are here to serve you.

Why Choose The Medical Oncology Group?

Our care center is made up of a team of dedicated individuals to help guide you through your diagnosis and its treatment options: Medical Oncologists determine and direct your personalized cancer treatment plan; Nurse Navigators provide patient care and support under the direction of the oncologists; and Office Staff will help facilitate all of the above with little burden to the patient so that you can focus on your treatment and recovery. Our oncologists personally take care of their hospitalized patients rather than having hospitalists tend to them.  We strongly believe this continuity of care best ensures your personalized treatment plan is optimally implemented.

Patients who have difficulty arranging transportation or managing the costs associated with transportation to one of our locations should call us. Our nurse navigation team may be able to help you defray those costs so you can focus on your treatment.

Regardless of your treatment decision or appointment type, we do advise bringing someone with you to your appointments so that you may feel more at ease. You’ll likely be receiving a lot of information at each visit; some patients feel more comfortable having a second set of ears present.  For chemotherapy infusions, feel free to bring any distractions such as a book or tablet. We will provide creature comforts such as pillows, blankets, recliners, televisions, and snacks. For appointments requiring labwork, please stop by at your leisure in the days before the appointment in order to have your lab results ready so we can provide clearer and more informed guidance regarding your treatment.

The Medical Oncology Group is Dedicated to the Mississippi Gulf Coast

The world of cancer treatment and care can be challenging for patients.  We are here to help with all of the different aspects of your care so that you can focus on getting better. This includes but is not limited to: educating you about your diagnosis and treatment options, assisting with appointments,  scheduling and transport, providing information related to home needs and support groups, pointing patients towards therapy and financial solutions, and offering information on clinical trials that may be of interest.
