Surgery for Treatment
Surgical approaches to cancer treatment are often accompanied by chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy as surgery can often only remove some of the cancerous tumor. Removing part of a tumor may help the other treatments work better or it may relieve pain associated with the physical presence of the tumor. Surgery treatment is the physical removal of the tumor associated with the cancer – but this may not always remove the cancer altogether.

Surgical Options

Surgery may also be part of the diagnosis as it will allow your doctor to define how advanced your cancer is, the size of the tumor, and whether it’s travelled or spread within the body. This is often the primary treatment for a tumor-based cancer as the continuation of the treatment may depend on what is found during the surgical intervention.
Sometimes surgery is used to improve the patient’s quality of life rather than treat the actual cancer. Whether or not you need surgery as a part of your cancer treatment, our medical oncologists are well-practiced in considering all treatment types and side effects before discussing options with new patients so you’ll be confident in the treatment course you decide upon together.
