Radiation Therapy TreatmentRadiation therapy is cancer treatment that uses ionizing radiation to control or kill malignant cells in a more targeted manner. This may be curative if the cancer is localized to a specific area of the body or it may be used to prevent tumor recurrence after cancer surgery that was unable to remove the entire malignant tumor. It is often used in conjunction with chemotherapy to target the cancerous cells more locally.

Radiation Therapy Side Effects

Radiation therapy controls cell growth, damages the cancerous tissue and encourages cell death among the malignant cells. Radiation may also be used in palliative care when remission is not considered possible but the patient may need relief from symptoms.
Radiation also has side effects including those associated with chemotherapy and sores in the mouth, throat and stomach, swelling in the areas targeted by the radiation, infertility, and later symptoms like fibrosis, hair loss, other types of cancers, etc.
The precise treatment or combination of treatments as well as expected side effects depends on the tumor type, location, stage and patient health and our medical oncologists are well-practiced in considering all treatment types and side effects before discussing options with new patients.
